Description

How might we make Singapore a more welcoming place for our migrant brothers and sisters to work and live in?

The issues faced by our migrant workers are complex and cannot be solved by a single organization alone.

From 2021 - 2023 through my work in A Good Space Co-operative, I helped to design and convene 90+ multi-sector representatives from dorm operators, employers, the Ministry of Manpower, NGOs, academics, doctors and migrant workers to prototype ideas that improve the life of our migrant workers, using the Collective Impact approach.

Through a series of workshops, they scoped out key issues faced by migrant workers, generated ideas and formed work-groups to test their ideas. Eventually, 3 multi-sector teams implemented prototypes of their ideas and showcased them at a Finale event:

  • Surveying 150+ employers and 40+ employment agencies to understand their open-ness to enabling domestic workers to view the hiring history of their employer to facilitate better matching and reduce situations of abuse

  • Organize a national competition for students and migrant workers to produce digital stories to counter negative stereotypes

  • Writing CVs for migrant workers living in transition shelter with an urgent need to find a job to stay in Singapore.
